Nigeria

I was born in the commercial city of Kano, in Northern Nigeria, on 4th May, 1982. My parents were both senior civil servants with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education. I received the best of education growing up amongst children of other senior civil servants (Nigerians and educational experts from other countries in Africa, Europe and Asia). We lived in the staff quarters of Federal Government College, Kano and attended the Staff Primary School in the college. We had the best of teachers and many students performed well above average. Most of us proceeded to the best secondary schools upon completion of our primary school programme. There weren’t many private schools in the Kano Metropolis in the early 1990s so most students either went to missionary secondary schools, military secondary schools or government-run secondary schools. It was seen as being “below class” to go to a private secondary school at that time as most of them were really small and poorly equipped. Enrolment rates were also low.It was a really big disappointment for members of my family, my friends and former primary school classmates to hear that of all the options available to me, being a high-flying student, actually one of the best in class, I ended up going to a private school called Kano School of Business Studies (KSBS). It was the decision of my mother to take me there. While others felt sorry for me because most of the students enrolled there were either house boys or house girls, apprentices, young dependent relatives of wealthy individuals or those who weren’t lucky enough to have been admitted into the top schools, it was an introduction to what would later become my field of specialization. Destiny plays out in ways we do not expect! In that school, I learnt a lot about Office Practice, Commerce, Book Keeping and Accounting, Typewriting and Shorthand. I found these subjects very interesting and highly beneficial. I also excelled in them. What I did not know was that my future was being shaped. I met highly professional teachers at that school – most especially the Accounts Teacher – Mr Chuks Okafor. He later became the Principal. I spent only one year at KSBS – my first year of secondary school (called JSS 1).There was so much pressure on my parents to withdraw me from Kano School of Business Studies. This was not because the secondary school was not duly registered with the Kano State Ministry of Education. In fact, it was a fully accredited Examination Centre for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The reason was because I had no academic challenge from my class mates. I fell sick for a month in the third term of the only academic session I spent there (that was the entire June 1993) and I came back in July to top the class! That was the stroke that broke the camel’s back. I was withdrawn from KSBS after the 1992/1993 Session and I was enrolled at Federal Government College, Kano in September 1993 after passing their entrance examination into the second year of secondary school (JSS 2) in August 1993.I spent the next five years of my secondary school programme at Federal Government College, Kano (FGCK). The setting there was different. The five business-based subjects I studied at KSBS were grouped as modules into one compulsory subject called Business Studies. I excelled greatly in Business Studies at FGCK because of the solid foundation I had at KSBS. I also excelled in Economics when I transited to the senior secondary school, even though I went in as a pure science student. I graduated successfully from secondary school in June 1998 (as the third overall-best student).I attended a French Language School – Alliance Francaise de Kano from July - December 1998 and bagged a Diploma in French Studies. I attended a computer training school called Hands-On Institute of Information Technology (HIIT) in Kano between October 2000 and May 2001 when I got my Diploma in Information Technology (DIT), having straight A’s in all my courses and graduating top of the class. At that time, IT training just became available in Nigeria and my newly acquired skills came in handy. I worked in my mother’s private school using these two diplomas from September 1998 – August 2003 while trying to secure my university admission. I was privileged to be called by the French School in March 2001, to join other present and former students to go for a language immersion programme in Zinder, Niger Republic. It was the first time I would travel outside Nigeria. When I left my mother’s school, I worked for a year as a document production expert in a Business Centre close to the university I would eventually be enrolled in. Within three months, I was made the Manager of the establishment which provided various business support services ranging from document production on computer, printing, photocopying, scanning and emailing. My very superior skills in typing and word processing, as well as my very good command of both the English and Hausa languages attracted many customers from near and far, even from the royal palaces of far away emirate councils from other states in Northern Nigeria, when they visited Kano City to pay homage to the Emir, who was second, in hierarchy to the Sardauna of the Sokoto Caliphate.Well, for six years, from 1998 – 2004, I tried applying, every year, to study various courses in the university. I tried Civil Aviation, then Computer Science, then Chemical Engineering, Architecture and then Economics. When all these didn’t work, in my sixth year after secondary school, I applied to study either Education and Accounting or Education and Economics. This time around, I got lucky. I got admitted into Bayero University, Kano in October 2004. I combined Education and Economics as a double-major. Political Science was my minor. I excelled academically in university. At the end of my second year in university, in July 2006, I received a special award for emerging as the overall best student in the entire Faculty of Education.Apart from excelling in academics, while in my third and final years in university, I was truly privileged to have been a member of a global Entrepreneurship-based club called Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE). It is now known as Entrepreneurship-Action-and-Us (ENACTUS). Headquartered in the United States of America, it seeks to make the world a better place by creating economic opportunities for others. It had, as its motto: “A head for business, a heart for the world.” I and other members of the team worked on more than five social entrepreneurship projects to empower women and youths in Kano City and also launched environmental and health campaigns to help improve the lives of the residents of the city. Each SIFE Team had a Business Advisory Board (BAB) which looks into the activities and finances of the team and offers advice and support where necessary. I was appointed as the Assistant Project Manager for a two-year tenure (September 2006 – July 2008). We compiled the reports of all our activities into annual reports and presented them to a panel of judges at the SIFE regional and national competitions held respectively in Abuja and Lagos, in the year 2007 and 2008. In 2007, I was presented with a Service Leadership Award by the Board of SIFE while in 2008, I was presented with another Service Leadership Award by the Dean of Student Affairs and the Head, Department of Business Administration, Bayero University, on behalf of the university SIFE Team. These entrepreneurship competitions attracted over 1,200 students from more than 40 tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The judges were senior management executives from some of the most successful companies cut across Nigeria’s private sector. Some guest speakers also came from the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) to train all competition participants in leadership and governance as well as success in corporate business. I volunteered with SIFE Nigeria after graduating and was part of the Organizing Committee for three competitions subsequently – 2009 (Regionals, Abuja), 2010 (Regionals, Abuja) and Lagos (Nationals, 2011) joining their technical team for the first two years and being the Head of Students’ Hotel Accommodation in Lagos. In the 2009 SIFE National Competition, our school, Bayero University, emerged the overall winners in July and represented Nigeria at the SIFE World Cup in Germany, in October 2009. Most of the ideas used for the stage presentations and the report designs came from my humble self even though I could not travel with the rest of the team owing to my mobilization for the National Youth Service.I graduated from university in November 2008 as the second overall-best student with a CGPA of 4.18 out of 5.0 points. We had our convocation in January 2009. My friend, who emerged the overall best made a CGPA of 4.23 out of 5.0 points. I went for my one-year mandatory National Youth Service in July 2009 and completed it in June, 2010. In this period, I worked in the University of Ado-Ekiti (now called Ekiti State University). My skills in high-speed typing and document preparation on computer (using MS Word) as well as in designing university adverts for the national dailies (using CorelDraw) earned me a job in the Information and Public Affairs Division of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.In September 2010, I got a teaching job at an international high school, in the heart of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, where I taught Cambridge IGCSE and UK University Foundation Economics and Business Studies. After three years in this position, after contributing significantly to the progress of the school in many other non-academic areas such as hostel administration and anchoring school events, I moved to another school, worked there for a year and maintained the same teaching position, playing several similar roles as I did in my previous school. This time around, I added Accounting to the subjects I taught at the Cambridge IGCSE and UK University Foundation Programmes. In October 2014, I joined The Centagon International School (TCIS) where I have worked for the past 11 years now. This happened after I got admitted to study my MSc Development Economics in July 2014, at the University of Sussex, in the United Kingdom. I was really disappointed at not being able to successfully secure a Commonwealth or a Chevening Scholarship to fund my Masters studies in the UK. However, coming over to TCIS changed so many things for me. One of these was the prospect of pursuing a postgraduate degree online! I met a couple of American citizens who were expatriates employed to lead various sections of the school and they introduced me to online studies. I got married to a very beautiful wife in May 2015. In July 2015, I tried pursuing an MSEd degree online from Walden University but the cost was just too high for me, especially considering the way the exchange rates was rising! In November 2015, I secured an M Ed in Educational Leadership from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus. I had to drop out in June 2016, owing to rising costs of living and also because God had just blessed us with a baby boy in March 2016. The costs just kept rising but we survived anyway! In April 2016, I was opportune to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa for the Cambridge Schools Conference. Meanwhile, I had been earlier appointed as the school’s Examinations Officer and Cambridge Programmes and Professional Development Coordinator back in September 2015. In South Africa, I met a number of Arab men who were school leaders and executive board members in top international schools in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. My conversations with them opened my eyes to the world of school business - especially the business of international education. On my return to Nigeria, I started looking intentionally at how private schools operated – especially those that run international programmes. I took a very good look at the model put forward by GEMS Dubai – that has a group of world-class schools running various international curricula, across leading countries and business destinations around the world. It then dawned on me that education, just like financial services, logistics, aviation, hospitality and tourism, is an essential service which can be provided profitably and systematically to targeted customers – in this case [the children of] – expatriates, international businessmen and women, celebrities in sports, music and the movie industry, diplomats, top military and government officials as well as members of royal families. I saw that private schools could be run as corporate organizations and be built into high successful business empires. I also saw that the international education providers such as Cambridge International, Pearson EdExcel, IB, AQA, OCR, the British Council IELTS, ETS TOEFL and the College Board SAT all operate as well structured and viable business models, although some present themselves as not-for-profit organizations. That realization was all I needed to make up my mind! When I was done teaching, I was going to open my own private school and run it like a successful brand in the international education industry! One other thing I gained from my South African experience (in April 2016) was learning about Google Classroom. I had never imagined that so much had been done to take the provision education online. I spent the next one year studying Google Classroom and mastering all its features and capabilities. I tried introducing it to our school in November 2017 but they felt it was not necessary at that time.In February 2018, I had a very rare privilege – to take my high school students to the United Kingdom to attend the Cambridge Leadership Academy (CLA) Discovery Programme in Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. It was an eye-opening encounter for me to be in one of the top five universities in the world, learning in a customized, residential programme, in the winter! The content of the leadership programme was very rich. I began to learn how to package such elite leadership programmes for youths and collaborate with leading universities to provide them profitably to [the children of] high net-worth individuals who will pay well for them, understanding the great positive impact such programmes can have on the future business or political careers of their children. In February 2019, I had another very rare privilege. This time around, I took my high school students to the United States of America, to attend the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) Conference in New York City! We stayed at the New York Hilton and also had our conference sessions there. We however had the opening ceremony of the conference at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Hall, in the UN Headquarters in Manhattan, New York. It was one of the best times of my life! The snow, the breath-taking views of New York City, the skyscrapers, the shopping malls, Ground Zero and of course, the boat ride to the Statue of Liberty! There was something truly special about America! The breath-taking creativity and world-class excellence I experienced in the service delivery, most notably in the hotel where we stayed, the shops, the restaurants and taxis made me love their tourism and inspired me to replicate the same in my future business. Everything in New York exuded excellence! No wonder it is called the business capital of the world! Well, I planned, on my return, to begin to organize such Model UN Conferences for high school students in African cities like Abuja, Accra, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Kigali. God blessed my family with a baby girl in March 2019 shortly after I returned from New York, USA. With great determination and inspired by what I saw at the conference in New York, I ran our first in-school MUN conference in June 2019 and in July, opened talks with the organizers of the NHSMUN Conference in New York – the International Model United Nations Association (IMUNA) to collaborate with them in hosting these conferences in Africa. It would enable us to not only provide leadership, diplomacy and global issues education but also tap into the tourism opportunities that abound in Africa. This is really big business and I was determined to tap into its full potential! Our in-school conference started generating revenue in millions of naira by July 2022! We have continued running these Model UN conferences in our school since then. We collaborated with the American International School in Abuja (AISA) to run theirs in November 2022. We have been enjoying this collaboration since then with three other international schools also joining us at AISA.Looking back a little, things took a twist in late March, 2020 when the Covid-19 Pandemic hit the world! Schools, places of religious worship, businesses and government offices had to shut down. Our school, just like other schools globally, could not resume physically in April 2020. However, this situation presented a very great opportunity for me to showcase my knowledge and skills in launching and running an online learning platform for our international school here in Abuja. I led the school in its transition from onsite to online learning. I first launched the two-week free trial version of Google Classroom on 9th April, 2020 but when I realized that we were going to be delayed by Google before they would give us institutional approval to use [for free], the Google for Education Suite, I quickly set up another similar platform called Edmodo which was also recommended by Cambridge International. I trained the management and staff to be able to use this platform. With this, we were able to resume online on Monday, 27th April, 2020. We successfully ended the session in July 2020, shortly after Google gave us institutional approval. With this great success recorded, I was automatically made the Virtual Learning Coordinator of the school. After three months of leading the school management, staff and students in using Google Classroom, I started seeing how one could actually establish a private school and operate entirely online thereby bypassing the huge costs involved in securing a physical campus before starting up one’s school. A clear solution had come for me! In November 2020, I made up my mind to set up my online school when I was done with my teaching career! It has been five years now and I have spent all this time putting together all my ideas and perfecting my plans about how I would start it up, what my target audience would be, how I would secure the finances I would need, how I would market it online, what international curriculum I would run, how we would blend in-person conferences to bring together annually, all our students, how I would collaborate with other organizations like the United Nations, and how I would expand our coverage and scope of operations to other English speaking countries of Africa and later to the rest of Africa and Africans living abroad. With all these plans, one thing remained certain: I would also need to have a postgraduate degree before commencing this business project of mine. What better course could I have settled for than to go for a Masters (and a Doctorate) in Business Administration after seeing on Facebook, the course adverts put up by Atlanta College of Liberal Arts and Sciences? These fully online courses are just the answers to my prayers about bagging my post-graduate qualifications before setting off to run my own global business – a privately owned online school, running an international curriculum, providing world class education and raising future-ready leaders who would secure the advancement of Africa’s economic development.

Rev. Reggie Dabney was born to Vernell and Cornelius Dabney. He is married to Lisa Ferguson Dabney the love of his life. God has blessed Rev. Dabney with 3 Sons, (Marvin, Dondre, and Justin). His grandmother ensured that he was acquainted with the teachings of Christ and the church during his childhood. But he did not join a church until he was 23 years old. He was highly active in the church from the time he joined until now. In December 2011, he accepted the calling from the Lord to preach and teach his word in and out of season. He had to study to show myself approve and on April 29, 2012, he preached my initial sermon at the Providence Baptist Church in Ashland, VA and was licensed. He has been steadfast in faith ever since. Under the supervision of his Pastors the Late Dr. Lawrence B. Samuel, Sr. and Dr. Marcus Leggett, He has grown tremendously in faith and practice. Subsequently his hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and His righteousness. Rev. Dabney is a graduate of VCU – L. Douglass Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. He has a Degree in Business Administration from Columbia Southern University, Master Degree from North Central Theological Seminary in St. Petersburg, Florida. His Doctorate Degree of Ministry from North Central Theological Seminary in St. Petersburg, Florida. He serves as a Lead Senior System Administrator with VCU Health Systems, in Richmond, South Hill and Tappahannock Hospitals. Selected by VCU Health System Leadership in 2023 to Represent VCU at the RVA Tech Gala. Selected out of 400 Technical and Information System Team Members. Team was Awarded RVA Tech Team Excellence Award, issued by Richmond Technology Council · Sep 2023, Rev. Dabney is 6 Sigma certified. Rev. Dabney serves on the Forbes Member Team, (HIMSS)Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Member Team and Columbia Southern University Veterans Team Rev. Dabney Ministry Statement is , as believers, we are all called to always be ready to give a reason as to the hope that we have. (1 Peter 3:15) Thus, as one called to specific office in the body, the charge to equip the saints is of utmost importance. (Eph. 4:12-13) The overarching goal of ministry is found in Matthew 28:19-20, which indicates that God desires that people live lives indicative of his presence, leadership, and an unequivocal faith in him. Effective ministry develops mature Christians able to withstand, endure, triumph, and ultimately represent the embodiment of God’s will for humanity. Apart from the Word, this is not possible. Therefore, study and practice of the sacred scripture is necessary for proper nourishment and growth. (John 1:1-4; 2 Tim. 2:15) It is after such steadfastness that we are able to truly appreciate the byproduct of God’s grace toward us. (3 John 1:2)
